Restoring Structure and Beauty to a Brick Staircase

This project involved the restoration and rebuild of an aging stone staircase integrated with a retaining wall system in Rumson, NJ. The homeowner’s goal was to repair structural failure, improve safety, and bring the steps back to a clean, cohesive look that matched the elegance of the surrounding landscape and patio.

The Challenge

When I first arrived on site, the staircase had clear signs of failure. Several rows of block had shifted and collapsed, leaving a large void in the middle of the steps. The integrity of the retaining wall was compromised, and the stairs were no longer safe or visually consistent with the rest of the property. Proper drainage and base support were also concerns that needed to be addressed to prevent future movement.

My Approach

I approached this project with a focus on rebuilding from a solid foundation upward. That meant carefully removing the compromised sections, re-establishing a stable base, and ensuring proper compaction and drainage behind the wall. Each stone was reset with attention to alignment, spacing, and long-term durability. My goal was not just to repair what failed, but to rebuild it in a way that would last and look seamless with the existing hardscape at this home in Rumson, NJ. .

THE TRANSFORMATION

The before image shows the extent of the damage—a partially collapsed staircase with exposed aggregate and uneven tiers. In the after image, the transformation is clear: the steps are fully restored, evenly aligned, and structurally sound. The retaining wall now supports the staircase properly, and the entire feature blends naturally into the surrounding patio and landscaping. What was once a hazard is now a clean, welcoming transition between levels of the yard.

CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT

The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:
