Restoring a Decorative Aggregate Walkway with Brick Inlay

This project involved the restoration of a decorative exposed aggregate walkway with brick inlay detailing in Middletown, NJ. The homeowner’s goal was to preserve the original character of their entry path while addressing areas of wear, settling, and deterioration. The walkway, framed by brick borders and intersected with diagonal brick accents, had great design bones—but needed careful masonry work to bring it back to life.

The Challenge

Over time, sections of the walkway had become uneven, with visible wear in both the exposed aggregate surface and the brick joints. Some areas showed signs of shifting and minor cracking, while the brick inlays had begun to lose their clean definition. The challenge was to restore structural integrity without compromising the original design.

“Brett’s work was excellent and they were very neat and clean.”

My Approach

I approached this project with a focus on precision and preservation. Rather than replacing the entire walkway, I worked to carefully repair and restore the existing materials. This included re-leveling affected sections, cleaning and refining the exposed aggregate finish, and resetting or repointing the brick inlays to ensure consistency and durability.

Attention to detail was key—especially in maintaining the alignment of the diagonal brick patterns and ensuring the transitions between materials remained clean and intentional at this home in Middletown, NJ.

THE TRANSFORMATION

The restored walkway now feels solid underfoot and visually polished. The exposed aggregate surface has regained its texture and color, while the brick inlays once again provide a strong architectural accent. The transformation not only improved safety and function but also elevated the home’s curb appeal.

CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT

The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:

“Brett’s work was excellent and they were very neat and clean. Will definitely book them again!”

CONCLUSION

This project highlights how thoughtful masonry restoration can extend the life of existing features while preserving their original charm. It’s always rewarding to bring new life to well-designed spaces without losing what made them special in the first place.
