Custom Fireplace Mantle Transformation
Few features in a home carry as much visual impact as a well-crafted fireplace. In this recent project, in Middletown, New Jersey, the homeowners wanted to transform their existing fireplace mantle into a more refined and substantial focal point that would better reflect the warmth and character of their living space.
Their goal was to replace a plain, underwhelming surround with custom masonry work that added texture, craftsmanship, and a timeless sense of permanence. Projects like this are especially rewarding because the fireplace often serves as the architectural heart of the home.
The Challenge
The existing fireplace lacked the character and presence the homeowners envisioned. While functional, the mantle did little to anchor the room or complement the surrounding design. The challenge was to create a fireplace feature that felt authentic and balanced, while integrating seamlessly with the home's existing finishes and proportions.
As with all interior masonry work, attention to detail was essential. The new mantel needed to appear as though it had always belonged in the space
“Communication was great, the job came out great, brett does great Work, and is very courteous and works very clean”
My Approach
I began by discussing the homeowners' vision and understanding the style they hoped to achieve. From there, I carefully selected materials and developed a design that emphasized both durability and visual appeal at this home in Middletown, New Jersey.
Each component was installed with precision, ensuring clean lines, proper proportions, and a natural flow to the finished stonework. Throughout the project, my team and I maintained a professional and organized job site, arriving on time each day and treating the home with the utmost respect.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The before image shows the extent of the damage—a partially collapsed staircase with exposed aggregate and uneven tiers. In the after image, the transformation is clear: the steps are fully restored, evenly aligned, and structurally sound. The retaining wall now supports the staircase properly, and the entire feature blends naturally into the surrounding patio and landscaping. What was once a hazard is now a clean, welcoming transition between levels of the yard in Middletown, New Jersey,
CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT
The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:
“Brett and Faith were a pleasure to deal with.
We removed a wood mantle from a fireplace and had Brett instal a stone replacement.”

This fireplace mantel transformation reflects the care and craftsmanship that I strive to bring to every project. By combining quality materials, precise masonry techniques, and close collaboration with the homeowner, we created a finished result that feels timeless and built to last.
