Stone stepping path gives a backyard lawn a clear route
This project was a stone stepping path across the side lawn of a family home, running between the back deck and the pool area. The homeowners were dealing with a well-used stretch of grass that was showing the wear of constant foot traffic, and their goal was to give that route a defined, durable path without turning the yard into a full patio.
The Challenge
In the before photo, you can see how the lawn had begun to thin and discolor along the way people naturally walked, with the space sitting between the house, the pool fence, and the paved pool surround in this home in Middletown, NJ. A path in a spot like this has to do two jobs: it needs to feel natural against the lawn, and it needs to sit firmly enough underfoot that it stays put through wet weather and daily use, including by kids and pool guests coming and going.
they went above and beyond and were very helpful
My Approach
Faith and I chose a flat, natural-looking stone in a soft gray that would blend with the neighboring pool surround and the siding of the home. We laid out the path so the stones followed the way the family actually moves through the yard, spacing them for a comfortable stride, and then set each one so it sits stable and level in the lawnin Middletown, NJ.. Keeping the spacing consistent from one end of the path to the other was the detail I paid the most attention to.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The after photo shows the difference. A row of gray flagstone-style stepping stones now curves across the lawn from the deck side of the yard toward the pool, giving the family a clear, comfortable route and taking the pressure off the grass. The path keeps the open, natural feel of the lawn while adding a defined line that ties the deck, the fence, and the pool area together in Middletown, NJ..
CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT
The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:
“Faith and Bret are always reliable. They went above and beyond and were very helpful! Definitely would book again for future home projects!”
CONCLUSION
Not every masonry project is a large build, and small projects like this one are some of my favorites because they make everyday life around the home a little easier. Faith and I were glad to give this family a path that looks natural and holds up to daily use, and hearing that they would book us again for future projects is exactly the kind of feedback that keeps us doing this work.
