Brick Front Stoop Rebuild Restpres a safe, solid entry
This project in Middletown, NJ brought me back to a front entry stoop that had been a fixture of the home for years — a small set of brick steps leading up to the front door, flanked by wrought iron railings. Age had caught up with the brick and mortar, and the client’s goal was to rebuild the steps so they were structurally sound again while keeping the same classic look the entrance has always had.
The Challenge
Years of weather and settling had taken a toll on the brick steps, with cracked mortar joints, chipped brick faces, and a noticeable gap opening up where the treads met. Beyond the cosmetic wear, a stoop like this sees foot traffic every single day, so any looseness in the structure is a real safety concern, not just an eyesore. Getting the steps torn down and rebuilt meant working in a tight footprint right at the front door, without disrupting the homeowners’ daily use of their main entrance any more than necessary.

My Approach
In Middletown, NJ I rebuilt the steps from the brick up, replacing the cracked and loose brick with fresh material laid tight and level, and repouring the landing at the top so it met the door cleanly and evenly. Faith and I matched the new brick and mortar tone closely to the original steps so the rebuild would feel like a continuation of the stoop’s classic look rather than a patch, taking the time to get each course level before moving on to the next.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The before-and-after images show the difference clearly. The cracked, uneven brick and gapped joints are gone, replaced by clean, tightly laid brick steps and a smooth new landing at the door. The stoop is solid underfoot again, and the entrance looks refreshed without losing the classic brick character it always had.
