This project was one of those satisfying full-entry transformations — the kind where the scope of the work really speaks to a homeowner’s commitment to getting their home looking its best. The client located in Spring Lake New Jersey, came to us wanting to replace a set of tired, weathered brick front steps and update the home’s foundation with a natural stone veneer. Together, these two elements frame the front entry and set the tone for the entire property. The goal was a cohesive, elevated look — durable natural stone that would complement the home’s contemporary shingle exterior and modern front door.
The Challenge
As the before image shows, the existing brick steps had reached the end of their life — stained, worn, and visually dated against what was otherwise a well-updated home exterior. The concrete treads and brick risers no longer suited the aesthetic direction the homeowner was taking the property, and the foundation below the door lacked any finishing detail at all. The challenge was both practical and aesthetic: removing the old steps and rebuilding in natural stone requires careful structural work to ensure the new treads are properly bedded and level, while the foundation veneer installation demands precise fitting around existing utilities and grade changes to achieve a clean, professional result across the full front facade.

My Approach
I began by removing the existing brick steps and preparing the base for the new stonework. For the steps, I selected large-format natural stone treads with a chiseled, rough-faced edge — a material that reads as substantial and timeless while pairing naturally with the rugged dry-stack veneer used on the risers and foundation below. Each tread was carefully set level and securely bedded, with the riser faces built up in irregular-coursed fieldstone to create that layered, organic look that natural stone does so well. The foundation veneer was installed across the full front face, carried consistently from the steps outward to tie the entire entry together into one unified composition. The existing cobblestone pathway leading to the steps was preserved and complemented by the new stonework in Spring Lake New Jersey.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The contrast between the before and after images is striking. Where plain, weathered brick steps once sat against a bare foundation, there is now a fully realized natural stone entry — generous stone treads with chiseled edges, rough-coursed fieldstone risers and foundation veneer in warm greys and tans, and a cobblestone pathway that grounds the whole composition. The home’s contemporary black door and cedar shingle exterior are perfectly complemented by the natural texture and tone of the stonework.
