Brick Retaining Wall Repointing Breathes New Life Into a Pool Patio
This project in Middletown, NJ brought me to a beautiful backyard pool patio where a brick planter wall — the same wall that frames the steps down to the pool and edges the stone patio — had started to show its age. The client’s goal was straightforward: restore the wall’s mortar joints so the structure was sound and the whole space looked as sharp as the flagstone and pool surround around it, without tearing out and rebuilding brick that still had plenty of life left in it.
The Challenge
Years of exposure to pool chemicals, moisture, and weather had worn down the mortar joints across the brick planter wall, leaving them soft, uneven, and in a few spots starting to crumble. The wall wasn’t just decorative — it retains the planting bed along the pool deck and ties directly into the brick soldier course inlaid in the concrete patio, so any repointing work had to match the existing brick color and joint style precisely or the repair would stand out rather than blend in. Working around mature plantings, a covered pool feature, and finished stone decking meant every step needed to be careful and controlled.

My Approach
I carefully removed the deteriorated mortar from the joints without disturbing the surrounding brick, then repointed the wall course by course, matching the original mortar color and tooling so the repaired sections would read as part of the wall’s original craftsmanship rather than a patch.
