Outdoor Wall Transformation: A Clean, modern update
This project involved the resurfacing of an outdated stone wall along the entry staircase of a coastal home in Middletown, NJ. The homeowner reached out with a clear goal: to simplify and modernize the look of the wall while improving the overall curb appeal of the property. The original stone veneer—while solid—had an uneven pattern and a color palette that clashed with the home’s otherwise clean and neutral exterior. They wanted something smoother, more modern, and in harmony with the updated aesthetic of their home.
The Challenge
The original stonework had been in place for years, but it created visual heaviness and contrast that felt inconsistent with the rest of the house. The surface showed signs of weathering, and the joint lines were varied and somewhat chaotic due to the multi-tone stone. Our challenge was to remove the existing veneer and install a new surface that was clean, consistent, and durable—all without disturbing the structural integrity of the stairs.

My Approach
I began with a detailed consultation with the homeowners to understand their vision—one centered on minimalism and cohesion. We decided the best course of action was to completely remove the existing stone façade and replace it with a smooth stucco finish that better aligned with the house’s exterior siding.
Careful demolition was required to avoid damaging the stairs or underlying wall structure. Once the old veneer was removed, I prepped the surface with a high-bond masonry base before applying the stucco in multiple coats. The final finish was clean and seamless, offering a striking contrast to the previously uneven surface at this home in Middletown, NJ.
THE TRANSFORMATION
Before Image:
The original wall featured a patchwork of reddish and gray-toned stone tiles with varied sizes and textures. Though functional, it felt visually busy and clashed with the home’s siding and entry features.
After Image:
The wall now features a fresh stucco finish in a neutral, off-white tone that complements the siding and creates a seamless visual transition from the stairs to the front porch. The modern look brings simplicity and refinement, allowing architectural elements like the railing and porch columns to stand out beautifully.
The transformation is more than aesthetic—it brings a sense of calm and order to the front entrance.
