Exceptional Retaining Wall for a Coastal Home
This project involved the construction of a new stone retaining wall for a coastal residential property in Red Bank, NJ . The homeowner sought a solution that would stabilize the steep hillside, protect against erosion, and enhance the property’s curb appeal—all while complementing the coastal aesthetic of their home. My Approach
After thoroughly assessing the site and listening to the homeowner’s goals, I designed a dry-stacked stone retaining wall that combined function with form. Using natural stone sourced to match the home’s palette and surroundings, I began with a carefully compacted base layer, ensuring water drainage and slope stabilization.
I worked systematically up the hill, dry-stacking each stone by hand to ensure a tight, stable fit. My goal was to build a wall that not only held the hillside firmly in place but also blended organically into the existing landscape and plantings.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The transformation is striking. The before image shows an unstable, bare slope with exposed roots and loose soil. It posed a risk to both the home’s foundation and its overall appearance.
The after image reveals a beautifully constructed, hand-laid stone retaining wall. Each stone was carefully selected and placed to create a cohesive, polished look. The new wall frames the lush landscaping and supports the raised garden beds above.
