Restoring Brick Steps and a Post Base to Their Former Strength
Not every masonry project involves a dramatic full-scale build — and that’s perfectly fine with me. Some of the most satisfying work I do is bringing neglected brickwork back to life. This project involved the repair and restoration of an outdoor brick staircase and a deteriorating post base at a residential property in Red Bank, NJ. The existing steps and surrounding brickwork had seen better days: crumbling mortar joints, eroding brick faces, and a post footing that had begun to fail were all threatening both the appearance and the safety of the entryway. The homeowner’s goal was simple — get it looking right and make it last.
The Challenge
As you can see in the before image, the brickwork around the wooden post base had deteriorated significantly — mortar had washed out, bricks had shifted, and the footing itself had cracked and separated from the surrounding structure. The steps nearby showed similar signs of wear: wide, open joints, surface erosion, and an overall lack of cohesion that made the area feel unstable. The challenge wasn’t just cosmetic. Repairing failing brickwork around a load-bearing post requires careful attention to structural integrity, not just appearance. Every brick and joint needed to be assessed, and the post base had to be properly re-set to ensure it would hold securely going forward at this home in Red Bank, NJ.
“I didn’t have the biggest job in the world but they treated it like one.”
My Approach
I started by carefully removing the damaged brickwork around the post base, clearing out failed mortar and any loose or compromised bricks without disturbing what was still sound. The post footing was re-set and stabilized before any new brickwork went in — getting the base right is what everything else depends on. From there, I rebuilt the post surround course by course, matching the existing brick profile and using fresh mortar throughout. The step joints were fully raked out and repointed, restoring tight, clean lines across the surface. Throughout the job, I worked carefully to blend the repaired areas with the surrounding older brickwork so the finished result would look unified rather than patched.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The after image shows the result: a clean, solid, well-finished brick staircase with tight mortar joints and a neatly rebuilt post base that sits secure and flush within the surrounding brickwork. What had been a crumbling, unsafe-looking entryway now presents with the kind of crisp, confident finish that makes the whole exterior feel better. The repaired sections blend naturally with the older brickwork, and the post base in particular looks like it was always meant to be there. It’s a straightforward but genuinely satisfying outcome — functional, durable, and clean at this home in Red Bank, NJ.
CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT
The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:
“He explains the process and leaves the job with a perfect finish.”
CONCLUSION
This project is a good example of something I believe strongly: no job is too small to deserve careful, skilled attention. A crumbling post base and worn brick steps might not be the most headline-grabbing project, but they matter — to the safety of the property, to the appearance of the home, and to the homeowner who has to look at them every day. I’m glad we could deliver results that made a real difference, and the client’s kind words are a reminder of why that approach is always worth it.
