Custom Stone Fireplace Installation

This project involved transforming a standard framed fireplace into a fully custom stone feature that would serve as the visual anchor of the client’s living roomin Middletown, New Jersey.. The homeowners were seeking a durable, natural-looking upgrade that elevated the room’s character while maintaining long-term structural integrity. With their trust in Earth & Mortar, the goal was to create a handcrafted fireplace surround that blended clean lines, texture, and craftsmanship.

The Challenge

When I first arrived onsite, the fireplace was in its earliest prep stage—a framed-out surround covered with cement board, protected floors, and a temporary hearthstone laid out for material planning. The structure was sound, but the space required a deliberate approach to ensure proper weight distribution, seamless stone alignment, and a design that would feel both modern and timeless.

The clients emphasized the importance of clear communication and craftsmanship, which guided every step of the build.

“Brett and Faith were incredible to work with from start to finish”

My Approach

Stonework is always a balance of structure and art, and for this fireplace, I approached the project with a methodical, hands-on process. I began by finalizing the layout based on the clients’ design preferences—determining stone size, texture, and patterning to ensure the finished surround felt cohesive and intentional at this home in Middletown, NJ

With the base framing in place, I meticulously planned the stone placement around the firebox, built a proper foundation for the hearth slab, and accounted for symmetry along vertical and horizontal lines. Constant communication with the clients ensured the work progressed exactly as they envisioned, with Faith and I providing updates at each key milestone.

THE TRANSFORMATION

The transformation from the before stage—a bare cement-board fireplace surround awaiting its final identity—to the completed stone fireplace was significant.

Before:
The fireplace appeared as a raw, unfinished construction zone: taped-off firebox, protective floor coverings, exposed seams, and stacked materials ready for installation.

After:
The completed installation revealed a warm, natural stone fireplace with clean joints, consistent texture, and a solidly built hearth that grounded the composition. The new stone surround provided both elegance and durability, creating a permanent focal point that enhanced the comfort and aesthetic appeal of the home. The stonework brought depth and dimension to the room, tying beautifully into the home’s interior style.

CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT

The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:

“From our first point of contact through job completion, both Faith and Brett have gone above and beyond in terms of transparency and craftsmanship. We truly believe that Earth and Mortar is a company of integrity; all aspects of their work prove that point.”

CONCLUSION

This project is a strong reflection of Earth & Mortar’s commitment to quality, integrity, and clear communication from start to finish. It was a pleasure to guide this fireplace from raw framing to a fully realized stone feature that the homeowners can enjoy for years to come at this home in Middletown, NJ.
