A Dream fireplace, finally built: natural stone surround with reclaimed wood mantel
Some projects are special from the very first conversation — and this was one of them. A homeowner reached out about a fireplace they’d been dreaming about since the day they moved in in Middletown , NJ. What existed in their living room was a bare gas insert framed by a dated brass surround and set against a plain, unfinished wall with no surround, no hearth, and no mantel. It was functional in the most minimal sense, but far from the warm, characterful focal point they’d envisioned. Their goal was to transform it into a full natural stone fireplace surround, topped with a reclaimed wood mantel — something that would anchor the room and reflect their personal style.
The Challenge
As the before image shows, the starting point here was truly a blank slate — a brass-trimmed gas insert sitting flush with drywall, no hearth extension, no stone, no framework of any kind. Building a full stone surround from scratch around an existing gas insert requires careful planning: the stonework needs to be properly framed and supported, the gas insert must remain safely accessible and compliant, and every course of stone has to be laid with precision so the finished surround sits square, level, and structurally sound. Beyond the technical demands, the aesthetic challenge was equally significant — selecting a stone with the right texture and tone to feel natural and timeless, and pairing it with a reclaimed wood mantel that would complement rather than compete.
“We’ve been dreaming up this fireplace since we moved in 1 year ago.”
My Approach
Faith and I worked closely with the homeowner to understand exactly what they had in mind — the style, the scale, and the feeling they wanted the finished fireplace to create in their living room at their home in Middletown , NJ.. We began by removing the brass surround and preparing the wall to receive the stonework, ensuring a solid substrate and proper framing around the insert. I selected a tumbled natural stone in warm grey and sand tones — a texture that reads as organic and handcrafted without being rustic to the point of feeling heavy. Each stone was hand-set course by course, working around the firebox opening with careful attention to alignment, proportion, and joint consistency. The reclaimed wood mantel — chosen for its rich grain and lived-in character — was fitted and secured above the stonework to complete the composition.
THE TRANSFORMATION
The before and after tell a story of complete reinvention. Where there was once bare drywall and a brass insert that seemed almost apologetic in its plainness, there is now a commanding natural stone fireplace that fills the wall with warmth, texture, and presence. The tumbled stone surround frames the firebox beautifully, and the reclaimed wood mantel adds a layer of character that feels both grounded and refined. Styled with a mirror, candles, and seasonal greenery, the finished fireplace has become exactly what the homeowners always imagined — the true heart of the room in the home in Middletown NJ.
CLIENT’S ENDORSEMENT
The homeowner’s feedback reflects their delight with the project:
“We’ve been dreaming up this fireplace since we moved in 1 year ago. Brett and Faith did a very wonderful job and made that dream come to life. Thank you Earth & Mortar!”
CONCLUSION
Knowing that a homeowner has been carrying a vision in their mind for a year — and then getting to be the ones who bring it to life — is one of the most rewarding parts of this work. This natural stone fireplace is a reminder of what’s possible when a client trusts you with something they truly care about, and when you approach that trust with the craft and care it deserves. Faith and I are proud of every aspect of this build, and we’re grateful to have been part of this family’s home story.
